The Oakland Community and surrounding area has something to offer those who value quality of life - friendly neighborhoods, good schools, safe parks, an extensive library system, churches of almost every denomination, excellent health care facilities and more.
If you value a wholesome environment (clean air and water, quiet streets, almost no crime) and want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, then you will find Oakland a haven. NO traffic lights in the entire town and we are proud of that.
Sutherlin is 2 miles South where you can bank, shop, enjoy more eateries and rest at several RV Parks, Motels & Hotels (also listed in our business directory)
From Historic Oakland, just a short drive (13 miles South) is Roseburg with a wide range of entertainment like the summertime free concerts, theaters, golf, tennis, many clubs, and franchise stores for all goods. An hour's drive North (50 miles) is Eugene home of University of Oregon DUCKS. Grants Pass is one hour to the South.
Oakland is the beginning / ending for the Umpqua River Scenic Byway ..67 miles one way .. Oakland to Coastal Reedsport, Highway 38/138

Oakland's Schools
Oakland Play School Co-op is for our pre-schoolers and located in our restored, historic old Washington School where our library and town hall also reside. A most safe place for our littlest citizens.
Oakland Elementary enrolls about 200 students, K - 4 with a staff of dedicated teachers serving our young and valued children.
Lincoln Middle School covers the academic needs of around 200 .. 5th through 8th graders;
Oakland High School also enrolls about 200 students .. 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.
We strive to prepare our young Oaklandians with the skills to succeed in the world, with computer labs, fine and creative teachers, and a dedication to nurturing and discovering their inborn talents, peaking their curiosity of the world around them, and teaching them to value and respect diverse cultures.
Adult education is rich in the area too. Just a few minutes drive from Oakland is Umpqua Community College, offering higher education in various fields on its beautiful campus overlooked by forested hills with the Umpqua River meandering by. There are also a variety of non-credit classes for the general public, covering many interests & offered at various locations around the county.

Oakland Area Churches
Church of Christ and Community Presbyterian Church are located in Oakland. The wider Douglas County area offers fellowship for many denominations as diverse as a small synagogue in Roseburg to the Unitarian, Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Lutheran, Mormon, Seventh Day, Jehovah Witness and many more.
The spiritually minded will find good, enthusiastic, and friendly fellowship among the various congregations in Oakland and the many denominations of worship within a few minutes drive.
There are a number of private Christian Schools in the area as well.

Douglas County Clubs Groups & Organizations
There are many outlets for socialization and various interests in the Oakland area. Whether you want to square dance, are a classic car buff, or want to get involved with our theatre group - Oakland offers enthusiasts good comradeship.
In the greater Douglas County area, the selection increases. We have a vigorous martial arts community as well as other health and sports clubs for golfers, tennis, soccer and other sports. UCC has many night programs and a pool open to the general public. Also the local YMCA has sports programs, racquetball, workout equipment, swimming, and much more for the health-minded of all ages.
There is a roller skating rink in Roseburg, as well as various skateboarding parks in the area. Boy and Girl Scouts, FFA and other youth groups too. The Rod and Gun Club, the Cribbage Congress, book clubs, quilt clubs, and dance among many.

Douglas County Health and Medical Services
Douglas County has a number of excellent health care facilities, such as Mercy Hospital with its new Cancer Treatment Center and Mental Health Facility and the Veteran's Hospital in Roseburg with its beautiful grounds. These are only a few minutes drive from Oakland. Sutherlin is located just 3 miles away and boasts many other amenities for your everyday needs.
There are a number of doctors of every description for young and old and in-between. The area also boasts a number of alternative health providers such as chiropractors and acupuncturists. There are several in-home health care providers on hand and retirement homes serving our elders.

Oakland Neighborhoods & Parks
Take a step back in time, enjoy, and reminisce! The neighbors are quiet and friendly. Enjoy a winter, spring, summer, or fall evening going for a walk, talking to neighbors or sitting on the front porch. Enjoy a BBQ in your backyard or in the parks. Oakland is the place where children play & enjoy a community that values the quality of life. Oakland City Park has playground equipment - picnic facilities and City events boasting our new Pavilion.Kanipe City Park, encompasses 5 acres of pleasant walking trails and a small creek. Stearns Park features privacy, picnic facilities, tables and barbecues. Railroad Park is located on Highway 99 (First Street) at the foot of Locust Street (Downtown) with picnic tables and a view of historic downtown.

Mildred Kanipe County Park is a 1100 acre county park east of Oakland with its wild rolling hills, grasslands, and mixed woods, the original orchard, barns and cabin. It offers horseback riding, picnic sites, several miles of hiking trails and scores of wild peacocks offer photo opportunities. This park was donated by Mildred Kanipe to Douglas County and is now maintained and operated by Douglas County Parks Department. Strolling through this beautiful park reserve, you will appreciate the preservation efforts. The perfect location for your outdoor wedding and reception. Only 8 miles and a beautiful ride too!
Douglas County Library System
Oakland Library is part of the Douglas County Library System, an extensive network of several libraries in Douglas County with access to many thousands of titles and other materials. It also includes the library of Umpqua Community College. Internet access is available for library patrons and membership is free to citizens of the area. Located in the Historic Washington School at 637 Locust St. It offers storytime and summer reading programs for children. A knitting group meets each Friday in the sitting room.
